Working from home

Working From Home and Not Loosing a Room to it.

For the past few months many people world wide have had to adapt to working from home, and this is not easy to attain this with busy households and neither the space to add a professional work place our a quiet space for those important Zoom Meetings.

From cupboards under the stairs to garden getaways, you don’t need to sacrifice an entire room to get a home office. However if you are part of the many taking advantage of the current cut in Stamp Duty you may well wish to show any prospective buyer that your home is adaptable and can have a designated work space should you need it.

Staircase

That cupboard under the stairs may look to small, but if you are sitting down at a desk you really don’t need much in the head room area.

A desk and chest of drawers with a comfortable chair and a good desk lamp in an under stair area could be just what you need. The space under the lower stairs may be a perfect space for low height filing cabinets.

Cupboard Space

A built in wardrobe is great if the room is being used , but if its in a spare room hardly touched then this small nook can usually accommodate a desk giving you use of an under utilised part of your home. You might need to rehang or remove doors if they fold inwards, but keep them if you can. One of the real advantages of a cupboard office is that you can close it off, keeping your work stuff out of your daily life.

Share the spare room

A spare room that’s used mainly for storing neglected gym equipment/piles of laundry and the odd house guest can easily be revamped to function both as a lovely workspace and a welcoming bedroom for visitors.

Take out or repurpose anything not strictly needed. The trick is to give everything in the room a double purpose. A dressing table can be turned into (or replaced by) a desk, while a wardrobe or chest of drawers can house a printer and other work items.

If that rarely-slept-in double bed is hogging the whole room, replace it with a sofa bed or day bed.

Overhaul

Don’t overlook your hallway as a space for your dream home office. A long wide hall might easily accommodate a floating shelf-style desk.

A minimalist desk could double up as a hall sideboard when not in use, and clever fold down wall tables can act as a slim shelf when not in use.

Added value to your home

With the working office possibly changed for the foreseeable future, your short commute down the stairs post the kitchen to your office in the hall may not be ideal right now, but for the buyer without any space at all to work from home this could be just what they are looking for and they may well be willing to pay to have this flexibility in their next home.
